Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition characterized by reduced saliva production from the salivary glands. This insufficient saliva can lead to a range of symptoms, including a persistent feeling of dryness in the mouth, difficulty speaking or swallowing, a sore throat, hoarseness, altered sense of taste, and an increased risk of oral health problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral infections (e.g., thrush). Causes of dry mouth are diverse and may include medication side effects (antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, sedatives), certain systemic diseases (Sjogren's syndrome, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, sarcoidosis), radiation therapy to the head and neck area, chemotherapy treatments, nerve damage resulting from head or neck injury, dehydration, tobacco use (smoking or chewing), alcohol consumption, and the natural aging process. The lack of saliva also makes it harder to chew and swallow food.
